I’m overwhelmed thinking back to my first time dining at Americana. Overwhelmed in the best sense of the word. The food, the ambience, the service—I don’t even know where to begin! Walking into the restaurant, you can see slivers of water through the windows at the far side of restaurant. That’s Lake Jacqueline, on which Americana sits atop. The ambience is elegant and luxurious without being pretentious. The lighting gives the whole restaurant a calming glow; the vibe is relaxed and welcoming. This restaurant is tucked away in the middle of the Desert Shores community, far off from the strip but you’d never guess that looking at the food.

I was 1 of 6 Vegas Lifestyle Influencers invited to dine at Americana. We sat out on the picturesque patio overlooking the serene lake. Chef Stephen Blandino, who is also the owner, created the most delicious and aesthetically pleasing dishes for us. We were treated to a three course dinner as well as champagne, wine, and all the desserts a girl could ask for. They even created special dishes for myself and my fellow vegan Ashley Diana. Given the fact that a vegan menu isn’t standard here, yet every dish was phenomenal, there is no question, Chef Blandino and his team are experts in their field.

We started the dinner off with a flute of champagne. The first course was a mango and radish slaw salad with mandarins and strawberry caviar. A portobello mushroom steak followed. This was the most delicious portobello mushroom I’ve ever had in my life; it was juicy and so packed with incredible flavor. Then they brought out a cauliflower steak paired with corn, bell peppers, snap peas, and oyster mushrooms over a cherry reduction. I paired a nice glass of cabernet with my cauliflower. Everything was absolutely delicious! And these were just the items I had. There was so much food!

For dessert they brought out some amazing dishes including cheesecake, chocolate cake, a lemon bar, macarons, blood orange sorbet, and cotton candy. The blood orange sorbet and cotton candy were the two vegan options and they were both yummy. My mouth still waters when I think about that sorbet. We finished dinner off with cappuccinos and some great conversation. I was floored by not only the food quality and taste but also by the plating. Every dish was beautifully plated and prettier than the last. The Americana team really know how to make their guest feel welcomed and valued. I’ve been recommending them to everyone! If you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion (or even just for a nice dinner) in an intimate setting with high quality food, great service, and beautiful lake views, this is the place to go. I can’t wait to go back for another fantastic dining experience.

Dinner with Margaritaville
Fun night with these lovely ladies! Photo by: @coreybondphotography

Monday night, I had the pleasure of attending a dinner at Margaritaville hosted by Vegas Lifestyle Influencers. Talk about starting off the week right! Good food, great drinks, lovely company, it was such fun! Everyone seemed to really be enjoying the food but I didn’t partake because it wasn’t vegan-friendly. I did however, order a margarita and it was fan-tastic! I love a good margarita on the rocks, it’s one of my favorite drinks— perfect for a hot summer night.

This was my first time at Margaritaville. I wasn’t familiar with the menu so I looked it over a few times trying to find any vegan options. They have a pretty good selection of food but the only entree that was vegan friendly was a spinach and strawberry salad (without the blue cheese). I wasn’t really in the mood for a salad so I passed on the food. Our waitress seemed very friendly so I decided to ask if she knew of any vegan food options I may have missed. She said they could make any of their salads without the meat or cheese and they also had a few sides that are vegan. I wasn’t too convinced but said I’d think about it.

A short while later, our waitress comes by holding a plate of rice, black beans, pico de gallo, and guacamole and says to me,” I can’t let you sit here and be the only one not eating.” How sweet is that?! She told me that one of the dancers (they put on performances inside the restaurant!) is vegan and that’s what she eats there. You guys, it was delicious! Those black beans may be the best black beans I’ve ever had, no joke. Best.Customer.Service.Ever. Thank you Clarissa, you made my night!

Thank you to our event sponsor, Margaritaville; our gift bag sponsors, Coola Suncare, Verb, and Modern Siren Boutique, and to Vegas Lifestyle Influences for the invite. 🙂

Hey friends! This is my final post in Norstrom Anniversary Sale picks. These eighteen items are my top picks from the kids section. They’re in random order but my number one pick is the Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30 Infant Car Seat (#10)! This was the very first item I received from my baby registry and I love it! It’s a great car seat. It’s very well made and easy to take apart should it become soiled (it will, often). You can throw it straight into the wash and tumble dry. I’ll be sharing a full car seat review soon, but don’t miss out on this anniversary sale pick! Mine was $250 on Amazon. This one is the same one for only $199! It would make a great baby shower gift btw.

I also received pick number 2 during my baby shower and I loved it! This is a great baby shower gift idea. It’s packaged super cute and everything is not only useful but natural and safe for baby. I love the quality of Honest Co. products. We’ve been using their diapers, wipes, bathing products, and body products since day 1 with our baby.

I’m obsessed with pick number 1 and 18. I can’t decide which one I want. I’ve been using a large Rebecca Minkoff tote as a diaper bag. Mostly because I never had the time to do my research on and pick out a diaper bag so I just grabbed my largest tote. Pick number 1 is a vegan faux leather diaper bag (cruelty-free yay!). The faux leather look and quilted pattern is so cool. Perfect for stylish moms and dads! Pick number eighteen is a nylon diaper bag. You know what this means? Machine washable! Yaaaaas! Need I say more? Ok, I’ll say more anyway. The camouflaged print is so cool! Love it!

I have to quickly mention picks number six and nine. I’m also deeply obsessed with these. I purchased one of the Baby Bling bows a while back and Athena gets tons of compliments every time she wears it. They are so cute and soft! They’re super stretchy without being loose. I love that they come in a variety of colors, we have about 8 of them now. She also has the cable knit one (pick number 13), so freakin’ adorable! Lastly, how cute is that tree shaped bookcase?! OMG, too cute. It also comes in white and gray. I’m thinking that gray one is coming home with me.

Motherhood Made Me Go Vegan

Forks over Knives and Becoming Vegetarian

A few years ago, my boyfriend at the time and I decided to try a vegetarian diet for 30 days. In my recollection, it was because we had hit a slump with our health. We were feeling tired and lethargic while eating all the normal healthy food people normally eat. According to the boyfriend, Marc, I asked him to watch Forks over Knives with me one day and that’s how it all started. It was very enlightening and we both had a prior interest in becoming vegetarian so it was an easy decision to try it. Marc stuck with it after the 30 days. I just reduced my consumption of animal protein. I began eating a more plant based diet for two reasons: 1) Marc and I lived together and it was more convenient to shop and cook the same meals for us, and 2) I felt better the less animal products I consumed.

A Gradual Shift to Becoming Vegan and Eliminating Thrush

My consumption of animal products became less and less. I ate meat about 1 or 2 times a month, I didn’t crave it or miss it like I thought I would. The same thing happened with dairy, I just started consuming less and less because I noticed how crappy I would feel after having it. We would drink a lot of almond milk but I would still have cow’s milk in my lattes. I knew it was impacting my ability to eliminate a mild case of thrush. I thought I could get rid of my candida infection (thrush) if I took all of my antibacterial and anti-fungal herbs diligently while still having milk. It wasn’t that much milk, after all. It was literally 16 ounces of milk every 2-3 days; that’s all the dairy I was consuming.

I kept having my lattes while dealing with thrush by taking coconut oil, garlic, barberry root, and probiotics. The thrush would seem to go away completely sometimes but it would come back the next day. I noticed that on the days I didn’t have a latte, the symptoms were more mild. Then, they would flare up within literally 10 minutes of me drinking milk. So I decided to switch my lattes to soy milk and voila, the thrush disappeared on its own within the week. Oh and I almost forgot to mention, I stopped taking all of my herbs about a month before switching to non-dairy milk. I just kept forgetting to take them. While the herbs did help, it was leaving the animal milk that helped rid me of thrush permanently.

Why I Became Vegan

The same week my daughter was born, I watched an undercover video of pigs at a slaughterhouse. One mama pig had given birth and her little piglets were running around the slaughterhouse lost, looking for her. She could barely fit in the space where she was being held, I hoped that’s not where she gave birth but in reality it probably was. One piglet fell into a stream, which was a mixture of fecal matter, urine, and other animal waste. The piglet squealed desperately trying to get out but it couldn’t. Its mother, squealing for her piglet, was crammed in her crate, completely helpless herself.

I couldn’t help but draw a parallel between that piglet and my baby; so helpless, crying, looking for his mama. I kept thinking of how it must feel to be that mama pig, pregnant for months, shoved in a crammed crate she can’t even turn around in. All to give birth to babies that she will never get to feed and nurture as her instincts tell her to but will instead die in a pool of waste. And she, herself, will be slaughtered so humans can eat her flesh. A life of pure torture and suffering from the moment of birth until the moment of death. It just didn’t make any sense to me. How can we treat a sentient being like this solely for the pleasure of our taste buds? It isn’t right.

That was the moment I decided to become vegan. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

DW Home Candles

Like most trips to Marshall’s, this trip had no particular objective. I like to peruse the home goods isle, from time to time, just to see what I find. I typically never leave empty handed, which you’d think would be bad for the wallet but it’s surprisingly not. Case in point, these DW Home candles. Hand-poured, divinely scented, and chicly designed at $6 a piece (for the medium single wick); a total steal considering this size retails for $12. This particular size has a 33 hour burn time, but even so, I’ve already gone through several of them (yes, I’m addicted). I bought all of the “Peony Petals” I could find and a few of these scents:

Fresh Cut Gardenia

Oak Moss Sage

Hyacinth Bloom

Cooling Eucalyptus

Green Tea Leaves

Relaxing Lavender

Lilac Blossom

Lavender Chamomile

They all range in size and price, from $3-$8 (at Marshalls) for the small and large double wick, respectively. If you can’t find them at your local Marshalls, you can find them online at DW Home or on Amazon, they retail from $12-$30. I’m currently obsessing over peony and gardenia scents. I’ve always liked and preferred natural scents so these candles are definitely a new favorite. They have a nice weight to them because of the heavy glass that they come in and even just leaving them with the lid off is enough to lightly scent the room with delicate florals. These would make great housewarming gifts, now that I think about it.

Christmas gifts under $50

1. Snowflake rolling pin

2. Hand-painted wallet

3. Geometric pillow case

4. Acoustic iPhone speaker

5. Japanese moss aquarium

6. Royal blue druzy necklace

7. Ceramic fox yarn bowl

8. Beachcomber mug

I’m figuratively swimming in unique Christmas gift ideas! Personally, I tend to want to keep every item I buy on Etsy that is actually intended to be a gift for others. There are just so many cool things! I’ve had my eye on number 5 for a while now. It comes from Etsy shop Pink Serissa, which was kind enough to send me one. It’s so beautiful and delicate. The aquarium includes Japanese moss balls, also known as marimo.

These balls of algae are a Japanese natural treasure and are said to live up to 200 years.

Marimo can be passed on as a family heirloom and they add an interesting touch to any room. I love the clean and delicate look of this aquarium. Keep in mind the glass of this aquarium is very thin and very delicate. It’s best placed in an area of your home where it won’t be touched very much. I accidentally broke mine after moving a glass vase next to the aquarium. In retrospect, I should have chosen a lower traffic area to display it, such as on a bookcase.

There are so many cool aquarium options in Pink Serissa’s shop. These would make a fun gift for the person that has everything. You can also find some unique terrariums in the shop. Click the links above to shop each item and follow Pink Serissa’s shop on Facebook.

How my housewarming spice set came packaged.
Box includes a thank you note and jar care instructions.
Preparing my daily breakfast of seasoned zucchini.

These spice jars double as a piece of art!
Conveniently located next to my other spices and the stove.
Each spice jar comes with a food-safe magnet.

I’m absolutely thrilled about today’s post. These spice jars and spices are hands down one of the best products I’ve found on Etsy. They come from Etsy shop Gneiss Spice, pronounced “nice”. The shop as a whole is in the top tier best of Etsy, in my opinion. There’s so much to love about this shop. The jars are high quality, the lids are handmade, you can customize a set for your needs, these jars allow for better organization of your spice cabinet and they make a beautiful display. If that isn’t enough to peak your interest, you may also be pleased to know that these spices are organic and come from Mountain Rose Herbs company. Mountain Rose Herbs has won a wide array of awards for their commitment to making environmentally and socially conscious business choices such as being a Zero Waste Company.

The shop as a whole is in the top tier best of Etsy, in my opinion.

I wholeheartedly believe one should purchase products that are both environmentally friendly and socially conscious. I strive to practice this with every single product I purchase from food to beauty products and everything in between. This is reason number one I love Gneiss Spice, I know I can trust their products. Another reason to love them- they donate a minimum of 5% of profits to charity. I wish every business would to this. Which could be a reality if we, as consumers, support businesses like Gneiss Spice so that they can thrive and lead by example for other businesses to follow suit.

Personally, I LOVE spices. Seasonings spices are the easiest way to add flavor to your meals. I hardly eat animal products so spices really come in handy when cooking vegetable-based meals. For meat-based meals a quick 5 spice rub can really elevate the natural flavors of chicken or steak. I love to cook and do so on a daily basis for all three meals. Every meal requires at least 3-5 spices. That’s a lot of reaching and searching for spice jars. This is where these hexagonal spice jars come in super handy. Each spice is labeled, easy to find, and at arms reach now. I love that I don’t even have to open a cabinet to find my basics. As soon as I discovered Gneiss Spice I decided all of my spices need to be on the wall. The filled jars look like a piece of art!

Image from Gneiss Spice.

I’m looking forward to making the transition to all hexagonal jars. That’s why I purchased a large stainless steel plate, there’s so many more spices to add! Gneiss does sell empty jars so you can use your own favorite spices in their jars. See the empty jar sets here. If you’d like to order your spices from them, see this complete list of spices. They also have a few different styles of plates to choose from if you’d like to arrange your jars somewhere other than on your refrigerator. These sets are totally customizable, there are hexagonal jars, round jars, different colored lids, stamped lids, clear labels, DIY kits, and a long list of spices to choose from. Off the top of my head I just thought of 10 people this would make a great gift for. Christmas gift list: spice jars for everyone!

Round jars also available. Image from Gneiss Spice.

One last note. I purchased my metal plate from a craft store. I went to 3 different stores before I found it, it was the last one they had too. Then I had to buy a special drill bit that could go through metal so I could drill holes in it. Drilling the holes was NOT easy, the drill bit slides around on the metal plate resulting in a scratched surface. The drilled holes did not come out very clean, they were a bit crooked and had a sharp raised edge. All of this because I was not patient enough to order my plate and wait for it to arrive. Don’t put yourself through the stress of it and just order your wall plate along with your spices, you’ll be much happier, take my word for it.

Coffee, for me, is something very special. It reminds me of great conversation and deeply cherished moments with loved ones. For this reason, setting up to have guests over for coffee is almost ritual-like. I’m always collecting mugs, tea cups, and tableware in general. I look for special pieces that I know my guest will like. Every piece must be like a piece of art, pleasing to the eye. Having a beautifully set table can really elevate the simple experience of drinking a cup of coffee. Tableware isn’t just something used to serve meals on, it’s an extension of your fashion sense. Each piece from the linens to the glassware is a reflection of your aesthetic.

“What was once a mere block of clay is now something sleek and beautiful, artfully created by a pair of supremely talented hands.”

This cream and sugar set comes from the studio of Julia E. Dean. I instantly became enamored with this set for two reasons: it’s stunning, and it comes from one of my favorite Etsy shops. I absolutely love handmade items, and these pieces are literally a work of art. What was once a mere block of clay is now something sleek and beautiful, artfully created by a pair of supremely talented hands. The lid of this sugar jar really got my attention. At first glance it seems like any ordinary sugar jar but a second look reveals the slightly avant-garde detail in the lid. I can’t wait to debut this set on Thanksgiving, I’m sure it will bring many positive comments.

Don’t let the delicate appearance of  this creamer and sugar jar fool you. They’re made of porcelain but are quite sturdy and microwave and dishwasher safe. If you love these  as much as I do, wash them by hand to help preserve them. With Christmas soon upon us, this creamer and sugar jar would make a fantastic hostess gift. The classic design is clean and elegant and pairs well with any kitchen.

There’s another version of this cream and sugar set that has a gorgeous rustic design with a lovely hand-pressed shell pattern.

Some of my other favorites include this nautical coffee mug, the robins egg serving bowl, and the ever popular rustic woodland coffee mug.

One of the best things about this collection is that these items can be customized with a name or other details, they make such amazing gifts! You can shop these items and more on Julia’s website here. Read more about her work and follow her shop via any social media page below. Use promo code “EARLYBIRD” at checkout on the Etsy shop for 15% off your order until black Friday.  Also, you can watch a short video to see how one of her mugs is created, but be warned, it’s hypnotic.

Second day on the island we visited Salt Pond Beach.
The mai thai’s were by far my favorite part of the “cruise”.
Third day on the island, we went on a “dinner cruise”.
Fourth day we visited a secret beach. The road there (and back) was FULL of back to back potholes, but it was SO worth it.

After the secret beach (south shore), we headed to Kapa’a (east shore) for some shopping and dinner.
The end of the famous tree tunnel in Koloa (south shore). Leaving south shore, headed to the canyon.

We kayaked a couple miles up the Wailua River then hiked the canyon a couple more miles. We returned right before sunset, it was amazing!
The next day we drove to the north shore to Hanalei beach. It started to rain about an hour after we arrived but it was so beautiful and Marc (the boyfriend) and I both love the rain so we enjoyed it.
A stunning view of Hanalei before making our way down and out of the north shore.
On the last day we hung out in a cabana enjoying some cocktails and food while taking in the amazing ocean view from Poipu, once named America’s best beach by the Travel Channel.
The view from our condo, about 20 feet from the water. Ah-mazing! It was the perfect spot for breakfast and catching up on a bit of work in the evening.
We say this little guy on our last day in Kauai. I took this shot from out balcony. It’s as if he was saying,”Don’t go!” At least that’s what I tell myself.

Big fluffy clouds and a light wind make outside look a bit overcast and refreshing, it’s like autumn is has arrive early. But it’s LIES! It’s hot and NOT refreshing. This is making me wonder why I am in the desert in the summer. My plan was to be in Hawaii but we’re getting ready to move so I’m stuck here for the foreseeable future. At least I have about 300 photos from our trip to Kauai that I can longingly look at to remind myself that the whole world in not a desert. While looking through them I realized I hadn’t shared them so here they are!

In my opinion, we picked THE best spot to stay. We rented a condo at Kuhio Shores and it was perfection. We were about 20 feet from the water and facing the ocean. Staying there was also perfect because we were only 6 minutes form Old Koloa Town, which has great food, shopping, a grocery store, a post office, and more. Even closer than Old Koloa Town is Poipu Shopping Village, only 3 minutes away. We went there for shopping, coffee, and dinner several times. There is also Kukui’ula Village Shopping Center about 6 minutes away, next to Poipu beach, which also has great dinning and shopping options as well as a grocery store and a farmers market.

A local told us about the secret beach which is near Kukui’ula Village Shopping Center. After what seemed like a half hour (it was much shorter) of driving straight through potholes, there was a very short hike, about 5 minutes, through a wooded area which takes you straight to the hidden beach. From the condo to the hidden beach it was probably 30 minutes at most. If you’re thinking about visiting Hawaii and you want a relaxing, low-key vacation, you need to check out Kaua’i, also known as the “Garden Isle”.  If you need tips or recommendations, feel free to ask either here or on our Facebook page.
